What does it mean when we pursue the occult significance of numbers?  The answer will disillusion and confuse mystic seekers.
     Numerology is not mystical.  It is in fact an exercise in unrestrained logical thinking taken to an extreme level.

     And yes it is most definitely motivated by the id, the ego, and the superego, all at the same time.

     We assign a cosmic significance to each number relative to our perception of the cosmos as we, entities caught in a blink of time+space, experience it.  We then compile the values in our life, surrounding an event, or for any other purpose, and we decipher the connections.  Soon we have an intricate web of values based on prime definitions, sympathetic and opposing equations, and a corresponding set of links to sacred geometric symbols, runic sigils, and general mathematic folklore.
     Ultimately we find our lives are surrounded by, and intermingle with a myriad of complex numerical puzzles that relate to every facet of existence.  These puzzles that comprise the individual then intermingle into a larger puzzle; our interaction with others... leading all the way up to the ultimate puzzle that encapsulates the omniverse; time+space.  Or in other words, the very raw essence of existence.

     But what value does this puzzle have in one's life?  That is indeed unique to the individual and their goal in pursuing the puzzle. There is one absolute though:  The solution to the puzzle.

     The solution comes in two flavors when one is successful in numerological study:

• An awareness of the profound importance and potency of said puzzle.
• In the case of a less spectacular, and rather mundane result, the mind has still been exercised most vigorously, making the thinker abundantly aware that their intellect, and indeed logic itself, is not bound to the piece of meat that we call a brain. Nor is it burdened with the idea that everything must have prolific value.

     Some may say it is a form of astral projection by way of mathematic meditations, but that would be a cheap distortion.
     It is the purity of logic.  Not the only method to achieve such purity to be sure, but it is the easiest, and most accessible.
     There is, however, a downside to the study of numerology.  Dare I say, a danger. We see it in our modern digital world. An obsession with mathematic facts. You know the personas I speak of. they have been around for the last 200 years. They believe in the power of mathematics to prove and explain everything.  Nothing is beyond the law of this or that mighty equation.

     Pythagoreanism, Quantum Mechanics, Chaos Theory.

     All intriguing areas of study, yet when these functions are extolled as they are in the modern day religion we all know by the name of science, it becomes a sick derivation.  An act of human deviance, to worship and drool over the mighty icon... For This, Our Mighty Numeral. Oh Praise... PRAISE?
     Therein lies the danger... when the mind is weak and allows logic to become the slave of the function.  Mathematic fatalism.
